Laura Levie

I am a Birmingham-based artist who has been painting for more than 30 years. In my watercolor illustrations, I strive to impart the joyful, reflective and transcendent moments in life. I also enjoy celebrating the fun and interesting aspects of my home city and state. I paint with watercolor and gouache on watercolor paper, and use plastic wrap, cheesecloth and other materials to create interesting background textures for my whimsical illustrations. I've created illustrations for publications and organizations, painted custom commissions of pets and favorite things, and exhibited at various art shows.

In preparation for my upcoming 30-year college reunion, I created a Vintage Wake Forest illustration (circa 1990) to celebrate my experiences there. The Wake alumni office used the illustration in conjunction with our class fundraising campaign. By making a donation, class of 93 alums received a print of the illustration. We surpassed our $600,000 class goal for reunion-year gifts and had the highest total of any of the ten reunion classes! Since then, I worked with the Wake ZSR library on a series of illustrations for a fundraising campaign during National Library Week.

In 2022 I printed two books celebrating the city and state (Birmingham Lookbook and Drive Abouts). In 2019 I created a series of illustrations for the It's a Southern Thing book: Southernisms for Any Occasion (Click here to preview and order). They Draw and Travel, the internet's largest collection of illustrated travel maps, published several of my map illustrations in three of their compendium books. I’ve designed wall coverings for the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Alabama and UAB’s Center for Psychiatric Medicine, and created a collaborative art piece for Children’s of Alabama hospital. My Alabama Map prints were sold at the Alabama Bicentennial online store and the Alabama Department of Archives and History Museum Store in Montgomery as part of the 2019 state bicentennial celebration.

I have exhibited at Artwalk since 2017, and my work has been selected for awards consideration. I have also exhibited at Magic City Art Connection (April 2022), Mad About Birmingham (March 2023), and Icon the Illustration Conference Road Show (Kansas City, June 2022).

I love to tell stories and wish to help tell yours. I welcome the opportunity to create a custom piece for you, whether as an illustration for an article, story, real estate development, event or promotion; a standalone painting; or a wall covering. Much of my work celebrates and promotes Birmingham and Alabama.
